Qigong - "Chi-Kung"


I am, by no means, an expert on Qigong but I wanted to share what I have learned and learning. There is so much to learn about our bodies energy flow and how we have the power to control and heal ourselves. I have touched on breathing techniques before but incorporating body movements that help circulate our energies and more, is what I wanted to share here.


This is an ancient Chinese practice that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques, and focused intention to cultivate and balance the body's vital energy, known as "qi" or "chi." It has been practiced for thousands of years and is considered a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine and martial arts.


Key Aspects of Qigong:

  1. Physical Movements:

  • Qigong exercises often involve slow, deliberate movements that are designed to enhance the flow of qi through the body's meridians (energy pathways). These movements can range from simple, gentle stretching to more complex forms resembling Tai Chi.

  1. Breathing Techniques:

  • Controlled, deep, and rhythmic breathing is essential in Qigong. Breath control is believed to enhance the movement of qi and promote relaxation and concentration.

  1. Mental Focus:

  • Qigong emphasizes the importance of a calm, focused mind. Practitioners often use meditation or visualization techniques to direct the flow of qi and achieve a state of mental clarity and inner peace.

  1. Health and Healing:

  • Qigong is believed to improve overall health, boost the immune system, and promote healing. It is used to manage stress, anxiety, and chronic conditions like hypertension and arthritis​ (PGA TOUR)​.

  1. Energy and Vitality:

  • Regular practice is said to increase energy levels and vitality, enhancing physical performance and mental clarity.

  1. Balance and Flexibility:

  • The gentle movements help improve balance, coordination, and flexibility, making it suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

  1. Spiritual Development:

  • For some, Qigong is also a spiritual practice that fosters a deeper connection to oneself and the universe, promoting a sense of harmony and well-being.


Types of Qigong:

  1. Medical Qigong:

  • Focuses on healing and preventive health care. It is often used in conjunction with traditional Chinese medicine treatments.

  1. Martial Qigong:

  • Enhances physical strength, stamina, and agility. It is practiced by martial artists to improve their fighting skills.

  1. Spiritual Qigong:

  • Aims to cultivate spiritual awareness and enlightenment. It includes meditation and mindfulness practices.

Popular Forms of Qigong:

  1. Eight Brocades (Ba Duan Jin):

  • A widely practiced form consisting of eight exercises designed to enhance health and longevity.

  1. Five Animal Frolics (Wu Qin Xi):

  • Mimics the movements of animals like the tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and crane to promote physical and mental health.

  1. Microcosmic Orbit (Xiao Zhou Tian):

  • A meditative practice focusing on circulating qi along the body's two main meridians, the Governing and Conception vessels.

Qigong is highly versatile and can be practiced alone or in groups, indoors or outdoors, making it accessible to a broad range of people seeking physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth. I will go into more detail on these for better understanding, stay tuned.
