The Benefits Of Fo-Ti Root For Skin & Hair

Fo-Ti Root is a Chinese herb that has been used for centuries in herbal medicine. I recently came across this as I was searching and learning more about herbs from around the world. China has definitely received a lot of my attention lately on many herbs they use and I find it fascinating; all the benefits it has for our bodies as well as for our hair and skin. I am going to focus on the benefits for the hair and skin here because this relates more to my business and formulas.

I am going to simply list the benefits because this always makes for an easier read. I don't know about you, but I do enjoy reading in point form and once something grabs my interest, I tend to research further and in more detail. :)

For the hair:

  1. Fo-ti root is renowned for its ability to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. It contains essential nutrients, such as zinc, iron, and copper, which are vital for maintaining healthy hair follicles and stimulating hair growth. It contains a compound called 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-beta-D-glucoside (TSG), which has been shown to have a positive effect on hair growth. What? ok, TSG is a type of stilbene, which is a class of natural polyphenolic compounds known for their antioxidant properties. It is a glycoside, meaning it is bound to a sugar molecule (glucose) to enhance its solubility and bioavailability in the body. Not sure if that clears things up or makes it more confusing for you. In simpler terms, it helps promote hair growth by stimulating the proliferation of dermal papilla cells (the layer underneath the epidermis; where the hair follicle starts), which play a crucial role in hair follicle development and hair cycling. Ok. didn't want to get so off track but sometimes you need to go a little more in depth to understand.

  2. Fo-ti root has been associated with the reversal of grey hair. It is believed that the herb's nourishing properties help restore the natural color of the hair, preventing premature greying. Now I am told I am about 70% grey but other hair dressers have argued this. The point here is...can it reverse any portion of this back to my nature colour? or is this to be used when you start to see those little greys starting to come in? Again, my reason for using this in my shampoo is for the stimulation of hair growth and therefore; thicker locks and strengthening which is my next point.

  3. The rich nutrient profile of fo-ti root contributes to stronger, more resilient hair strands. Regular use of fo-ti root-based products can enhance hair luster and improve its overall appearance.

Skin benefits:

  1. Fo-ti root is packed with antioxidants, including anthraquinones and flavonoids, which help combat free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the skin. This can lead to a reduction in the signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.

  2. The moisturizing properties of fo-ti root can help maintain skin hydration levels, making the skin look plumper and more youthful. It also aids in improving skin elasticity, promoting a firmer and smoother complexion.

  3. Fo-ti root has been traditionally used to treat skin conditions like acne and blemishes. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties help soothe irritated skin and combat acne-causing bacteria.

  4. The presence of zinc and other healing compounds in fo-ti root makes it effective in promoting wound healing and reducing the appearance of scars.

  5. Fo-ti root's anti-inflammatory properties can be beneficial for individuals suffering from skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. It helps reduce redness, itching, and inflammation associated with these skin problems.

I am not sure if this herb is new to you or if you found this very enlightening like myself. I will be incorporating this into a wound healing formula as well to help heal scars and one that is sensitive enough to put on your face as well as your body.
