If I only knew then what I know now, I would not have used any of the baby products on the market. It comes down to educating and knowing ingredients. When it comes to labels on products, the INCI name is required. What the INCI name is: International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient which is the internationally recognized cosmetic name. This can add a lot of confusion for the consumer who simply wants to read ingredients like: coconut oil or lavender. While those are intertwined in the international name, it still leaves some question to the other ingredients that are still found in products.
Not everyone has the time or takes the time to google search the ingredients to find out if they are natural or synthetic and there are synthetics that are "safe" for products and allowed/considered natural with registered companies like Ecocert.
Some companies use these safe synthetics because they are still better options than the alternatives but when it comes to my company, I do not use safe synthetics at all.
Back to baby products and ingredients. I have listed here several reasons why choosing natural is best for your baby:
Gentle on Delicate Skin
A baby’s skin is much thinner and more sensitive than adult skin, making it more susceptible to irritation and allergic reactions. Natural ingredients like chamomile, calendula, and aloe vera are known for their gentle, soothing properties, making them ideal for use in baby products. These ingredients can help to calm irritation, reduce redness, and moisturize the skin without the need for harsh chemicals.
Avoiding Harmful Chemicals
Many conventional baby products contain synthetic ingredients, preservatives, and fragrances that can be harmful to your baby’s health. Parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, for example, are commonly found in skincare products and have been linked to various health concerns, including hormone disruption and skin irritation. By choosing products made with natural ingredients, you can avoid exposing your baby to these potentially harmful chemicals.
Here are some examples of those found in baby products; so you know what to look for:
Parabens in Baby Products
Methylparaben - May be found in some baby lotions or creams.
Ethylparaben - Occasionally used in baby wipes and skincare products.
Propylparaben - Can be present in baby shampoos and bubble baths.
Sulfates in Baby Products
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) - Sometimes found in baby shampoos and bubble baths, though many brands now avoid it.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) - Commonly used in baby body washes and shampoos to create a foaming effect.
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate - Occasionally used in baby soaps and cleansers.
Phthalates in Baby Products
Diethyl Phthalate (DEP) - May be present in the fragrances used in baby lotions or shampoos.
Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) - Rarely used in baby products, but could be found in certain baby creams or lotions that are fragranced.
Di(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP) - Can be found in some plastic toys, but generally avoided in baby skincare products.
Supporting Healthy Development
The products you use on your baby’s skin can be absorbed into their body, making it essential to choose products with safe, non-toxic ingredients. Natural ingredients, free from harmful chemicals, support your baby’s healthy development by ensuring that only the purest substances come into contact with their skin.
Environmentally Friendly
Choosing natural baby products is not only beneficial for your baby but also for the environment. Many natural ingredients are sustainably sourced and biodegradable, meaning they have a lower impact on the planet. Additionally, natural products often come in eco-friendly packaging, reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills.
Promoting a Healthier Lifestyle
Incorporating natural ingredients into your baby’s skincare routine sets the foundation for a healthier lifestyle. It encourages mindful consumption and a deeper awareness of the impact that everyday products have on our health and the environment. As your child grows, this awareness can extend to other areas of life, promoting a holistic approach to health and wellness.
Trusting Traditional Wisdom
Many natural ingredients used in baby products today have been relied upon for centuries in holistic, Ayurvedic, and ancient Asian practices. Ingredients like turmeric, coconut oil, and neem have long been celebrated for their healing and protective properties. By choosing natural products, you’re tapping into the wisdom of generations who have recognized the benefits of these ingredients.
